Crisscrossing

Crosses – To the outsider wandering through the countryside, they may seem invasive religious symbols, as if a bunch of conquistadors and missionaries had just set foot on the land.

But beyond their symbolism, our crosses reflect people’s ordinary lives with their sufferings, achievements and thanksgivings.

Scattered all over the place, with their origin often lost through the passing away of one generation after another, they have become part of our secular heritage.

Standing the test of time in bare simplicity or elaborate ornament, each one of them has its own story and its own character.

Dear wanderer, whatever your faith, do spare a moment of thought for any of these anonymous offerings that you may come across.
